Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effect of nutrient content as pollutants on water quality in the Lawu-Lawu River, Gunungsitoli Utara District, Gunungsitoli City. Increased domestic and agricultural activities around the river basin are suspected to be the main source of nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) entering the water body. The methods used in this study include field surveys and water sampling at several strategic points along the river. The water quality parameters analyzed include temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen (DO), biological oxygen demand (BOD), chemical oxygen demand (COD), as well as nitrate and phosphate concentrations. Laboratory analysis results showed an increase in nitrate and phosphate levels at certain points near residential areas and agricultural lands. This increase in nutrient concentrations significantly impacts water quality, particularly evidenced by elevated BOD and COD values and reduced DO levels. Thus, the high nutrient content in the Lawu-Lawu River contributes as a pollutant that degrades water quality. This study recommends integrated management of domestic and agricultural waste to maintain the sustainability of the river ecosystem.
